Olé! Rogatkin wins – Fedko’s dream comes trueAugust 14, 2017
O Marisquino offered riders and spectators one of the most unique backdrops on the FMB World Tour this weekend. Very few dirt jump venues can boast hot temperatures, a sunset and bags of sick tricks with a harbour as a backdrop. Once again it was Nicholi Rogatkin, who was able to send the best run of the day (87.33). The 21-year-old American secured his seventh win of the FMB World Tour season in Vigo, Spain, on Sunday. With Nicholi being the only rider already qualified for Red Bull District Ride to reach the final, all eyes were set on second place, which would reward the runner-up of the contest with a wildcard for the final FMB Diamond Series Event of the season at Red Bull District Ride (Sep 2).
The first rider to drop in was Nuno Pintas from Portugal. Scoring a solid 79.00 he put the pressure on his fellow athletes right from the get go. Only two Brits, Sam Pilgrim (75.66) and Tom Isted (73.33), were able to contest Pintas, but just came up short in the first run. The 23-year-old only had to make way for Nicholi Rogatkin, who sent a huge run to start off with, which scored 84.33.
With Rogatkin leading the charge, everyone was focussing on the battle for second. The suspense was immense and only few riders were able to push the pressure aside, especially after Nuno Pintas upped his game once more in his second run, scoring 80.66. Paul Couderc, the third last rider to drop in, came close to Pintas. The young Frenchman sent a great run, but also couldn’t quite get the job done, scoring “only” 77.33, which was just enough to push Sam Pilgrim off the podium for the moment. Then 19-year-old Erik Fedko was on the start tower. The FMB AM Cup winner in Europe last year, failed to put down the run he wanted in his first attempt of the day and desperately wanted to secure the FMB Wildcard for the FMB Diamond Series Event in his home country. The young German dropped in, kept it together and withstood the pressure! His score of 82.00 didn’t only earn him the best result in his young career but also a spot at Red Bull District Ride, which will be held in Nuremberg, Germany, on September 1-2.
