As the Freeride Mountain Bike Association, we've given the term "freeriding" a lot of thought, not just in the context of the Rampage. We've made it a habit to ask riders for their own definition of "freeriding" whenever we can. Obviously, some opinions are more controversial than others.
However, we believe that it is part of the freeride spirit for everyone to define their own passion and voice their opinions freely. After all, we're among friends. So check out these short interviews we did with a couple of riders and maybe you can figure out your own definition.

If you want, share it with us on our facebook page: www.facebook.com/FMBWorldTour

In your opinion, what makes the Red Bull Rampage special?

The Rampage is special first of all for the location cause its in the middle of nowhere in the dessert of Utah and the atmosphere is really unique. Secondly, the track is just Insane; its not the kind of stuff that we are riding all year long, those tracks are totally different (sandy, slidy, dusty, soft) and the sun is KILLING us....!

What was your best moment at the Rampage? What was your worst one?

My best moment at the Rampage was when I landed the Oakley sender safely and I flipped the step up right after the drop without having tried it before. I was so stoked and I felt alive again! The worst one was when I crashed on the easiest jump of my line only cause I wasn't focused. I was really pissed since I could have gotten a way better score without crashing!

Do you think there should be more competitions like the Rampage in the FMB World Tour?

Yes, I think we should have a few more events like the Rampage cause it's true mountain biking, its biggggggg and its on a f**g huge slope down the mountain. A bit more slopestyle elements would be perfect!

The Rampage has been referred to as the mother of freeride events. What does the term "freeriding" mean for you?

Freeriding means what it means.... FREE! That's what I'm living for: to be free to do what I want to do and to be free to go wherever I want to go on my bike and ride the way I want. To be free is the best feeling ever!

In your opinion, what makes the Red Bull Rampage special?

Rampage is so special because its a true freeride contest, it hasn't strayed from its roots and it takes an all around rider to do well at.

What was your best moment at the Rampage? What was your worst one?

Best moment was probably at Rampage in 08 sending the big canyon gap and getting 2nd. Worst moment could have been when I went to superman the canyon gap and my cranks spun and I missed pedals... That kinda sucked.

Do you think there should be more competitions like the Rampage in the FMB World Tour?

I think all contests should be more like the Rampage.

The Rampage has been referred to as the mother of freeride events. What does the term "freeriding" mean for you?

Freeriding to me means going out and exploring terrain and building big natural lines and shredding with your friends.

In your opinion, what makes the Red Bull Rampage special?

Individuality. All you are told to do is where to start and where to end; you can go anywhere on the mountain and build anything you feel like. Most of us riders are always complaining about the courses and at Rampage you build your own and go as big as you want.

What was your best moment at the Rampage? What was your worst one?

My best "moment" is most definitely riding down the landing after that 360, but riding in the afternoon with all your friends and just sessioning something is always the best, every year. Good weather, big bikes, bitchin jumps and good friends.

Do you think there should be more competitions like the Rampage in the FMB World Tour?

I think there definitely should, but it's nearly impossible to replicate. Contests like Chatel are a perfect substitute. It meets in the middle with Rampage and a traditional slopestyle contest. The more contests that we can ride our big bikes on the better.

The Rampage has been referred to as the mother of freeride events. What does the term "freeriding" mean for you?

Freeriding came from filming and simply riding whatever you feel like, but we obviously use it to describe the gamut of our sport now- contests, filming and riding anything on a Mountain Bike that isn't racing. Rampage IS Freeriding. It was one of the very first mountain bike contests and is still the most amazing and original display of Freeriding, today.

In your opinion, what makes the Red Bull Rampage special?

Rampage makes you feel like your one bad mother. It's a pretty cool feeling to be that scared of something and conquer it.

What was your best moment at the Rampage?

The best moment was the first time I hit the hip drop that mike and I built. I almost stopped riding and drove home but then I sent it. I landed perfect and couldn't wait to hit the line again.

What was your worst one?

I hit the last drop in my line with a backpack on and tweaked my back. That really sucked because I was just going to get lunch.

Do you think there should be more competitions like the Rampage in the FMB World Tour?

I think that every 2 years is perfect. After Rampage you're so sore, so tired and mentally strained. It's an amazing event but I think that how we do it is perfect.

The Rampage has been referred to as the mother of freeride events. What does the term "freeriding" mean for you?

Freeriding to me is going out with your buddies and riding. It's going out some days and building new trails, it's improving the ones we already have and if you ask me, any event that is held is not freeriding. It's a contest and it will never be freeriding. But at the end of the day, Rampage is as close as it gets to what I call freeriding. Build it, ride it. But it's still a contest and the atmosphere at a contest will never be the same as a day of riding with your bros. and that's what really sets "freeriding" apart. You don't have the egos that comps are filled with. It's pure.
