The heart of the french alps was pumping with epic Slopestyle this weekend - Crankworx les 2 Alpes returned for it's second edition and the biggest names in the sport turned up to compete for the Gold level points. Brandon Semenuk fought off his rivals - retaining his seat as Crankworx Les 2 Alps champion for the debut edition last year.
Brandon Semenuk may have made it look easy but it wasn't! The level of riding was some of the highest we have seen all season. With riders throwing down double backflips, double flipwhips and yes, triple whips - the pressure was on for the defending champion to lay down a specular run. Brandon didn't make it any easier for himself after crashing in his first run, and therefore having to put together his winning line shortly after in his second run (due to the reversed 2nd run starting order). But Brandon didn't let his fans down - he super technical line with opposite rotations and never-ending barspins earned him a consecutive victory.
With 1 point seperating the podium - the top three riders were super tight however it was Sam 'flippin' Pilgrim, who in his final run managed to jump ahead of Martin and land securely in 2nd place. Sam is having a strong year and this result at Crankworx Les 2 Alpes has definitely helped close the gap to Brett Rheeder who is currently still ranked 1st in the FMB World Tour overall ranking.
It looks like the super Swede is back! Martin Soderstrom, despite not making to the top of the podium had a cracking contest and at last we saw him nail his triple tailwhip, which has been long-awaited this season. There can be no doubt that Martin and his fans should be thrilled with his run. It was packed full of the typical technical tricks that we all know Martin for - the judges also noticed and awarded him the final spot on the podium.
Yannick Granieri was not only performing in front of his home crowd but was also riding a course designed by himself - and he did a good job. It was obvious that Yannick felt good on the Crankworx Les 2 Alpes Slopestyle course, he was sending his biggest tricks and nailing them flawlessly!
Finally we would all like to send out strong healing vibes to Brett Rheeder - the current FMB World Tour leader. Brett was a clear favorite for this event but unfortunately crashed in both his runs. He is one of the most consistent riders in the field and seeing him go down was a surprise to everyone. Brett - Get well soon and we look forward to seeing you back on the FMB World Tour circuit shortly!
